Hi Barb, at Michelangelo's time the statue stood in piazza della Signoria, just in front of the Palazzo dei Priori or Palazzo vecchio. He finished it in 1504. The statue was transported with a very large wooden cart, and 40 men attending the movement. Michelangelo finished it on the square, just a few details. Then in 1873 the original was moved to the Galleria dell'Accademia and a copy of it was placed in the square, where you can see it now.
