Aside from taking anywhere from 1.5 hr to 3.5 hours depending on the type of train you take and checking www.trenitalia.com to see schedules, there aren't that many late at night. I see only 2 trains after 9pm between Rome and Florence (remember Tuscany is a whole region, so you have to decide on a city to head to, like Florence) with the latest being a few minutes before midnight and taking over 5 hours since you have to change trains in Pisa.
If you are staying in Rome, whether it is worth it to travel to Tuscany and/or Verona totally depends on the time you have available. I wouldn't consider either a "day trip" from Rome because to really see them both and the area, I'd recommend heading to Florence, using that as a base and then from there exploring Tuscany (the same goes for Verona and its surrounding areas). From Florence, you can take day trips to Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano and into the Chianti wine region, to name just a few possibilities. You won't see much if you come up from Rome with the intention to head back each day.... Hope this answers your question about being "worth it" - they totally are but not as day trips! :)

Such a shame. I was kind of hoping to do a day trip in Napoli/Tuscany/Verona to see the main attractions. I looked into the website regarding trains, time and schedule but the rate is coming too expensive. It very hard to plan such trips when you have no clue to how such transport works. We don't have trains in our country ..... Thanks a lot for feedback! Really appreciated! by Kim Gauci 11 months ago
Well how about moving from Rome to Florence for a few days rather than looking at how much train costs going back and forth? It might work out that, yes, you have train travel cost, but not going back and forth to Rome ends up being cheaper! And you get to see the places you wanted. If you want more help with your itinerary, you can post more details and questions on the Discover Tuscany Forum here: www.discovertuscany.com/forum/
From Rome to Florence: One hour and a half with a quick train. More than three hours with a cheap one. You can check all the availables trains from Rome to Florence on this web site http://www.fsitaliane.it/homepage_en.html
